I often hear in my practice I don’t have trauma, or I had a good childhood growing up
There’s this misconception about “what trauma is” in society – most people relate the word trauma with words like “severe abuse or extreme neglect”
Trauma put simply is “an event that a person finds overwhelming” whatever that looks like for “you” no matter how “big or small” you think it is – plays a part in our brain development and relationships with others.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for treating trauma. EMDR combines standardized protocols with elements from various therapeutic approaches to help us process deeply entrenched traumatic memories.
EMDR therapy utilizes a technique called bilateral stimulation, engaging both sides of the brain through eye movements or tapping. This method mirrors the brain activity during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep — a phase often associated with processing recent events. By facilitating this state, EMDR helps unlock and reprocess traumatic memories, allowing for a resumption of normal information processing. This therapy is particularly effective in addressing the negative beliefs that stem from relational trauma, childhood abuse, or neglect.
Originally developed for PTSD, EMDR has also shown significant efficacy in treating a variety of conditions including:
• Panic Attacks
• Complicated Grief
• Disturbing Memories
• Phobias
• Pain Disorders
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Stress Reduction
• Sexual and Physical Abuse
• Personality Disorders
Even if the above symptoms don't seem to match your experience, EMDR therapy might still be beneficial. If you find yourself overwhelmed by disproportionate emotions, reactive to specific triggers, or struggling with dysfunctional beliefs about yourself, EMDR therapy could help you release these burdens and heal
EMDR therapy offers a unique approach for those seeking solace from the long-term effects of trauma. Bessel van der Kolk, author of “The Body Keeps the Score,” says that EMDR is one of the most effective ways to heal trauma and find relief from the symptoms of PTSD
